Title: First lambs of the year!
Post by: waterbuffalofarmer on February 13, 2017, 06:00:49 pm
So had a surprise today 2 newborns in the field. We don't scan them but we know when they will lamb as we time the tup  going in. Both are females and are doing very well. The surprise is because we left a few ram lambs in the flock and we were going to take them out, I think that's a lesson for next year, take out before sept, we usually do it's just it's been so busy here. We have a few more due so are bringing them in. I only hope the fortune we spent on this new ram that it hasn't gone to waste ::) How is everyone getting on with their lambing?

None due for me this year, but we're only just about scanning up here!!  The arrivals won't start in the village until mid-April at the earliest.

We had a surprise last year.   One of the Badger Face lambed a fortnight before the flock was due to begin lambing.  She'd jumped three fences (sheep wire topped with two strands of barbed wire) to get to the Southdown ram, then jumped back again.

And I only thought rams were the problem! ::) [member=27063]Marches Farmer[/member]   :roflanim: I looked at the sheep again this morning and only 1 looking close to lambing, the rest are not bagged up or showing any signs, so I am guessing it will be either a month or 2 for them at least. Update on the twins, we brought them to closer to the house to watch them, as mom never had a big bag. One of the lambs went down last night, so we pulled it and gave extra feeding, the other lamb had drunk all mom had to offer, so am afraid this is a pet lamb... She is quite small and thin and very light, as is her sister, but will make a nicely grown lamb in time, mom is a first timer, so am going to be giving her a good amount of food to improve her milk yield. They were getting licks and a hay bale in the field, which they seem to be eating well, but am thinking I will be giving the ones I can see which are due, seperating them first, extra feeding.

Our first ewe lambed this afternoon, twin ewe lambs. I thought she was only going to have a single as she wasn't huge. Chuffed to bits, they are the first lambs we have bred... all up and sucking within 15 mins, really strong lambs  :) they needed a little pulling as the ewe was getting tired but are a nice size and very alert

Excellent news twizzel. We had a ewe down with twin lamb today, dosed her for twin lamb and keeping her hydrated but I think we are going to lose her :( all the others are fine.

Have you had the vet? If not up in two days then I'd be inclined to give them a call... expensive loss losing a ewe and her lambs
Or if ewe really not good a shot gun and a sharp knife can give the lambs a chance

Well she had to be put down, as she just wasn't going to make it, sadly she was a long way off lambing :( Still at least we have more ewes to focus on. We have a few more to lamb now, one is looking really heavy. All of these lambs which are born at this time of year we will be selling them off mid summer, as although good genetics we can't register them as they are not out of this current ram. ::)

Sorry to hear about your ewe wbf... unfortunately the mother of my twins born Friday has taken a turn for the worse, suspect tear or infection. She went downhill last night within the space of 2 hours, rang the vet and started treatment, then the vet came out for her this morning but it's not looking good. Shes had a host of meds and am topping the lambs up now. She's my favourite too :'(
