Title: i'm old
Post by: sheila on June 20, 2010, 11:18:04 am

I'm not really grouchy,

I just don't like:
traffic,
waiting,
crowds,
lawyers,
loud music,
unruly kids,
barking dogs,
and a few other things
I can't seem to remember right now.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place,  somewhere.
I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.
I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days,
and when did they let kids become policemen?
I'm wondering,
if you're only as old as you feel,
how could I be alive at 150?
And, how can my kids be older than I feel sometimes?

{sigh} I had the very same feeling yesterday. {/sigh}

When I first started working, I used to thumb through The Sun newspaper occasionally in the works mess room. I remember noticing that the Page 3 girls were all about the same age as me.

A few years ago, I noticed that they were all now significantly younger than me.

Then yesterday, I noticed that I'm now old enough to be her Father, poor girl!  :'(

Bye bye to Youth already, and I STILL haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up!

Fantastic :)

I went to the moto gp today and caught myself thinking 'I could have been a racer if I had had the chance' instead of 'one day in the future I'll be a racer'

both childish thoughts I admit - but ambitions have become alot more realistic these days.

I thought I was getting lazy, didn't feel like lifting that sack of feed, couldn't dig for more than an hour at a time, can't up-end that stubborn ewe! No, I'm getting old, not lazy. I feel so much better knowing that!! ;D

Hey old age has its compensations, but they are too complicated to explain, you just have to wait until you get here.   ;D  ... then of course the memory goes so you forget what it is that was so good anyway ....

I read this somewhere, sad but very powerful:

This poem was found among the possessions of an elderly lady who died in the geriatric ward of a hospital. No information is available concerning her -- who she was or when she died.

See Me

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
Are you thinking, when you look at me --
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with far-away eyes,
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply,
When you say in a loud voice -- "I do wish you'd try."

Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe,
Who unresisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.

Is that what you're thinking, is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse, you're looking at ME...
I'll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still;
As I rise at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters, who love one another,
A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet.
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet;
A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep;
At twenty-five now I have young of my own,
Who need me to build a secure, happy home;
A woman of thirty, my young now grow fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last;
At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,
But my man's beside me to see I don't mourn;
At fifty once more babies play 'round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead,
I look at the future, I shudder with dread,
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I've known;
I'm an old woman now and nature is cruel --
'Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body is crumbled, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where once I had a heart,
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.

I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I'm loving and living life over again,
I think of the years, all too few -- gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last --
So I open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
Not a crabby old woman, look closer, nurses -- see ME!

I was given this poem many years ago and used it to train carers of the elderly. Very powerful.

Old age, (well middle age) is freedom from your kids (no babysitters etc), the house to yourself every now and again, you stop worrying about things that seemed so important ie body shape, how your peers view you (take me or leave me attitude appears an its so much better).

middle age is different these days, its not frumpy and old, its not grey hairs and perms. its fun and fashion, high heels and wellies.

look at photo of your mum or dad at your age, you will be surprised at how old they dress and look??

its also pigs and chickens, fences and mud, broken nails and nettle stings, splinters and cold hands . . .

And when you consider the alternative to growing old . . . it ain't that bad

You might (I hope!) find this link amusing.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/22/garlic_survey/

Being a long, long way past 40, I thought it was.

I thought growing old was "all in the mind" till my body decided to fall apart.

Currently, equipped with multiple pairs of glasses, hearing aid, stick and a large bag of prescription medicines, I step bravely over the threshold of my front door. I sometimes get as far as the front gate!

The really sad bit is knowing that I couldn't do much yesterday, and tomorrow I won't be able to do even that...

Hello NN .Now don't you take the HUMP will you please.Kath and I offer you our deepest sympathy.I am not quite at your stage yet.So I visit the Doctor frequently and the DP of WH to let various specialists look at me.C.O.P.D. Forces me to take Oxygen for a minimum of 20hrs a day.I have 2 machines that enrich the air that I breath and a thing called "Freedom 400" Its me Aqualung with out flippers ;D I would have enjoyed going to the show today or tomorrow but I am afraid I wouldn't manage from the car even if I was in the forward park to the Gate.Never mind all the walking that is required. A dozen or so paces is enough to make me stop and get my breath back even with the 400 I have to see Doctor in the morning.It will go like this for sure.Good Morning Mr Baker How are you today? to which I always reply "Bloody ace Doctor I woke up."Ah well lets have a look at you and see if we can keep it that way.He's doing a first class job so far.I tell you what though N N I do not enjoy Ian in Diagnostics Investigations stabbing that sawn off knitting needle in my wrist Well thats what it feels like Its not one of those small ones the nurse uses at the practice he claims he must have blood from an artery for analysis.They are some 3/4 of an inch buried in my wrist and if he misses first go it turns into a very painfull exercise The good thing is I'm still here and full o prune juice some say. ??? :D :farmer: :wave:
