do you need to been in the vet medical profesion to learn to sheep scan?
or is there courses on this that the general public can go on
thanks in advance
-
I used to do scanning. (still got the machine).
Obviously rules will have changed somewhat but I believe for sheep scanning, because it is done externally (unlike cattle and equines) you don't need any special qualifications.
You are best speaking to someone who does it and find out where they learnt.

The sheep scanners I know are farmers not vets.

cool thanks
i will look into it
-
if anyone has anymore info that they wish to share please do
thanks

You might have more luck asking on thefarmingforum.co.uk, there are scanners on there.

From what I've heard you can either do it or you can't. It takes a certain eye. Most people I think seem to learn from other experienced scanners? But you may find that difficult as most local scanners are not going to help train up the competition unless they are looking for someone to pass the business onto due to retirement etc  the equipment is extremely expensive though...

scanning is easy--- scanning accurately and at speed is difficult
It's only practice though ---- I have been offered the chance to learn before but never had the inclination
Talk to the equipment suppliers and/or scanners

brilliant thanks for the advice
it seems alot of the smaller flocks find it hard to get a scanner for obvious reasons
and yes the eqiupment is expensive
i will keep my eye open and do a bit of research
thanks
