Hi Folks
I'm Pete, I'm not yet a smallholder, although I rent a house on a farm (sheep and dairy). I'm in the planning phase currently and i'm thinking about moving into actually 'doing' some point next year. Although I'm currently in Devon the plan is to move to Lancashire/Yorkshire to be nearer the parents and inlaws.
My general intent is to start small with veg , chickens, and a few weaners to raise and expand from there - however as the forces say no plan survives first contact so the reality may be different.
I'm basically here to learn , but my current job is as a ranger team leader with the national trust so I do have some modest expertise in tenancy issues, and also in estate skills and fencing. Prior to working in this field i was an arb contractor so my main expertise is in chainsaws and treework. I have also worked semi professionally as a photographer, so i'm happy to help anyone out where my knowledge is relevant.
Looking forward to getting to know you all

Ah yes, on the way to Honiton. We're just the other side of Tiverton... always able to keep a man and a chainsaw busy! not sure we could teach you anything though! ha! We have 50 years of hedge-neglect to clear back in order to fence anything.

We are as about south and west as you can get in Somerset without being in Devon :) . In a triangle between the Somerset levels, the Blackdown Hills, and the Quantocks Hills.
You seem to have a lot of skills and knowledge that are needed for smallholding, so i'm sure you will do well. When it comes to livestock, start small, get to know there funny little ways, and then work your way up to greater things. Joy, frustration and puzzlement comes in equal measurement but it is never boring!
