Title: soay balding
Post by: tommytacit on June 04, 2010, 03:45:13 pm
Have a small flock of soays that have lambed for the first time this year. Two of ewes are loosing all their wool around the back end, not the normal wool shedding but all the way down to the skin which they are itching with their horns, have inspected for fly strike but no signs, - any ideas?

Sounds like perfectly normal Soay roo'ing.  They often look totally bald after that and tend to start around the rear half and neck.  The scratching could well be the normal way they rub it off.  If you take off the rest of the fleece you can have a close-up inspection to see if it is something out of the ordinary
