Hi everyone - just wanting to know your thoughts. A friend of mine has two bantams abput two year old, one of which is unwell. Vet has diagnosed conjuntivitis and put on antibiotics - on closer examination there is a lump down its throat! Which the vet is not certain how to treat but has put the hen on metcam.
It is not improving apparently - I have not seen the hen myself. It is very hungry but cant swallow. Any thoughts and advice.

Is it a lump or is it cream coloured canker Minty? Is she struggling to breath as well? Canker in the throat is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas Gallinae and is treated with Flagyl ((Metronidazole).

Does your friend know how to do a crop feed (tube into crop with liquid feed, Emeraid is excellent)? If not, maybe ask the veterinary nurse to do it?
Once you've done one it gets easier, and it'll give the bird essential nutrients.
Can the bird drink? If so, perhaps feed it very loose scrambled eggs which can just slide down her throat rather than needing swallowing?

Thank you - will pass on info! will ask her if its a lump or cream coloured canker.

Hi Definately cream coloured but difficult to see as food keeps getting stuck so not sure if there is a lump there. Going back to vet and my friend is going to ask for flagyl. Thank you lets hope she recovers.
