Title: Feeding Garlic and Mollasses?
Post by: loosey on June 02, 2010, 02:19:52 pm
I'm sure I have read somewhere that a certain amount of garlic and of mollasses is good for pigs (mollasses because it prevent worms and garlic as it is a natural anti viral?). I was wondering how much you would reccomend feeding?

I currently have both for my horses but they have 35g each in their feeds and it's not exactly cheap. Would I need garlic granules, powder or flakes?

Also to add to the end, can I put my weaner on very long grass to start with until they stomp it all down and uproot it? (probably a couple of days!). It's knee height at the moment! :pig:

Was talking on this subject to a friend yesterday, she puts garlic cloves in her pig water, and also cider vinegar.  I dont know if its a good thing or not.

Weaners will be fine on long grass.  They will enjoy playing in it and trampling it.

Hi Loosey, not sure who told you that mollasses prevents worms but I think maybe thats an old wives tale! Mollasess is pure cane sugar and is generally only used in animals diets as an appetite stimulant, and a good source of energy (think of kids that have too much sugar!). Plenty of people feed mollasses to horses (its in most horse mix feeds) and still follow a regular worming plan. The only way to ensure your piggies don't get worms is to follow a proper worming plan, your vet or an SQP from your local Agri Merchants could help you with this. I know we would all like are animals to have the most natural of diets, but nothing compares to drugs which have been put through proven clinical trials (sorry if that sounds a bit heavy but I am a trained SQP and have seen also the grusom results of worm infestation!)

Garlic however we all know is a fab herb, an antioxidant and improves general well being (is also said to be natural fly repellant!).

Hope this helps!

Beware - you might end up with garlicky sticky sweet pork  ;D

Pigs are like lawnmowers, only better...
