Title: Duck eggs for dogs

I have lots of duck eggs and don't know what to do with them. We aren't eating them ourselves.

I give the dog a raw duck egg every day or two but don't want to overdo it.

How many is too many?

I asked our vet the same thing regarding hen eggs.

Didn't really give a definite answer. Seemed to say that 1 or 2 each week was fine for a treat but that they didn't really need anything except their complete dog food. His concern seemed to be that they would add to the overall calorie intake and that Labradors put weight on easily so that would be his reason for limiting number given.

Ours have quite a few each week at certain times of the year but I'm careful about their weights so doesn't seem to be a problem yet .... they get loads of exercise and I'm careful about portions. In fact our Flattie has always had trouble maintaining weight. He is a bit hyper though. ::)

Interested to see what others have been advised.

I doubt that there is any specific answer to this researched anywhere. As I recall duck egg shells are made up of a coarser grain size of mineral in the shell and potemtially more porous to bacteria when compared to hens eggs... so the feeding of raw duck egg has a higher theoretial risk than raw hen egg.
So long as any increase in calorie amd protein is balanced by a reduced intake of other food then I'd expect a fair guess for a lan sized dog would be around 3 hens eggs per day max if on-going. But i have no definitive source.
My Dalmatian often hunts up an egg or two from the wife's wandering hens and is fine.

 I agree with Pgekevet - 3 a day won't cause any harm. My collies also help themselves to hen's eggs from time to time. I also wouldn't worry about increase in calory uptake as eggs are predominantly protein and it takes more energy to digest protein than the amount of energy derived from it.

Sally if you have plenty of duck eggs I can sell them for you .... mine aren't laying and I have a list of customers at Cwmdu who love them

My dogs all get a duck egg when i have any spare, or if they have laid out in the paddock because they find them.  Been doing that for about 8 years - none so far have had any problems  :fc:
