Hi Folks,
Our goats are enjoying year around pasture access - however, every winter they manage to transform the grass/dock pasture into a big mud heap (winter here in Scotland is the time between August and June). Would it be useful to lay some grass protection mats or mesh over the worst affected areas? Or would they just eat the plastic?

If they are like my goats - they will try to eat it and when unsuccessful will try and eat it again and again and again until its fooked. ;)
The best thing is to have two enclosures and try to keep damage to a minimum by letting things heal. But to be fair - winter is winter - most ground gets mushed if its being used and doesnt have time to heal over the no grow period.
As long as they have a dry bed and somewhere to stand out the wet every now and then, they should be ok.

worse case - chuck some pallets over here and there (solid topped) when the grass aint growin
