Title: Fruit trees growers - Scotland (or North of England at a pinch...)
Post by: Anke on October 17, 2016, 11:12:05 am
Can anyone recommend a fruit tree supplier in Scotland (as in trees are grafted/grown here as opposed to being imported from the south of England...)? Have just seen that Tweed Valley is closing.... what a shame.

Am after a pear, quince and maybe try to grow a cherry (in the polytunnel obviously).

Do Glendoick grow their own?

That's a shame about Tweed Valley. Must be hard to compete with the likes of Adam's Apples. who are selling at £7 a tree (and they're good. We bought dozens from them).

Andrew Lear, Bankfoot, near Perth https://plantsandapples.co.uk/ (https://plantsandapples.co.uk/)
John Hancox at Scottish Orchards http://www.scottishorchards.com/new_scottish_Orchards/Welcome.html (http://www.scottishorchards.com/new_scottish_Orchards/Welcome.html)

or try Clyde Valley Orchard Group

Thanks!

I have bought from Tweed valley and the trees are growing really well, yes it is a shame! But then, you don't need heaps of trees every year if they are good quality.... so difficult to get constant stream of decent orders I guess...

I agree with everything Rosemary just said.

We also bought some nice blueberry bushes and a couple of apple trees from https://www.scotplantsdirect.co.uk/ (https://www.scotplantsdirect.co.uk/) in Glenrothes. They could also be worth a look?

What about The Red Shed at Coldstream who have a permaculture set up and sell lots of fruit tree varieties http://grahambell.org/the-red-shed-nursery/ (http://grahambell.org/the-red-shed-nursery/)

Thanks, I have heard of him, but haven't (yet) managed to go and see the garden... but it is on my radar. Didn't know he was also selling trees... (and he is close enough for me to collect!)

Looks like there are a few, so now happy tree hunting for me...

The secretary of our orchard group is an apple grower and runs annual grafting days in auchhtermuchty in march most years.  For other trees I would try Woodbury estate up glen island, they're woodland species, hedgerow planting etc specialist but increasing number of fruit stocks in individual containers now.  They've a sale coming up I think, would love to go up but it may be dangerous!
