Title: Price to sell castrated ram lambs
Post by: tanyalou on September 02, 2016, 09:52:57 pm
Hi all,

I have a couple of cross bred and a couple of pedigree ryeland castrated ram lambs to sell but have no idea how much they are worth.
Any help greatly appreciated.  :)

Presuming they are not fat, I would put them in at a stores market, where they should fetch the going rate.

Thanks for that.

I was hoping to sell on for someone to finish as I am short on grazing and need to reduce numbers. They were born in March.  I was just going to advertise on classifieds etc. Do you think that's a viable option?

Try farmers free are sheep shed on face book, lots of people sell small numbers of sheep as well as large numbers !! Think that's the right name and I don't know if it covers your area, wherever you are ?? Good luck

I found our sheep through sheep shed on FB... It's quite useful to flick through there and see what's around.

Depends on their size, Ryelands can tend towards over fat very easily, so dont make good stores - its why they only tend to fetch 60-70 as a fat lamb when texel and char lambs are fetching 70-80.

If theyre close to 40Kg just send them in the fat ring, a ryeland should get somewhere close to £1.60p/kg, but if the markets well stocked with good texel crosses, expect less.
As stores expect £40/life as theyre either going to finish at a huge frame size next spring, or a tight risk of running fat early if they're fed barley to finish.

Doesn't seem much point putting them in the fatstock market when Tanyalou has indicated that they need finishing.  They would get a rubbish price so you might as well advertise them as free to good home and save your time in going to market and being insulted by the response. :innocent:

Seriously though Tanyalou - it's impossible to say without seeing them or having some idea what they weigh, as to what they are worth. That is why I suggested putting them in a stores market where someone would buy them to finish as required. If you would prefer to sell them privately, which is also a good option, then I would suggest you go to a stores sale and see what sort of price something similar is fetching there. But logically, if that's where you are going to get an idea of what to charge, then you might as well sell them in the market anyway!
