Title: Confusion with ear tags...
Post by: DenisCooper on August 08, 2016, 10:19:05 pm
HI,

I've got two lambs, slightly unexpected as my sister decided to buy them as a present....they seem to be settling in well.

I've not done much research or reading up on lambs and sheep as wasn't planning on getting any until next year, so I'm trying to catch up retrospectively now.

Ear tags are confusing me a little and i was hoping to get some clarification.

I understand the lambs need two tags, on in each ear, and one needs to be an EID tag.

They both currently have these tags from the farm they were bought from, and have their own numbers on them.

What I'm not sure of is if i need to change these tags and replace them with my flock / herd numbers or if they keep their existing ones as they were part of that flock originally.

Thanks in advance.

Denis

Yeh they keep there own tags... Only change them if they lose them then you can either replace them with like for like numbers if known....
But more often than not you would just replace them with your own tags... So long as you have recorded a replacement in your flock records.

Replacement tags on sheep not born on your holding MUST be red.
