Title: My goat Gordon
Post by: Goat girl on July 08, 2016, 06:55:33 am
I have just bought two pygmy goats from a breader, a nanny and a wether both 11 weeks old. I am new to goat keeping but have done loads of research. My problem is that I've just noticed that my little boy Gordon still has what I believe to be a testicle!! I've had a good feel and I'm fairly sure. What should I do? The lady who sold him to me has offered to put a castration band on but I'm worried at his age this may be to painful on the other hand if I take him to the vets for castration under GA I have to separate them and this would be traumatic as they are so bonded and get hysterical when not together. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

It is too late to put on a castration band - it would be illegal at his age. The procedure is very quick so they wouldn't need to be separated for very long.

Our vets are really good and maybe yours will allow his companion to go with him or vet can do the castration on your holding. The procedure is very quick if no complications  - just  a few minutes.

I would also get the vet to do it and think I would speak to the seller to suggest she paid or at least contributed as he is not a wether as sold.

This happened to me with my first pair. He'd been banded as a kid by the breeder but had one testicle left. The vet came out to him, gave him a sedative and local anaesthetic before removing it and it was over in minutes. He also had antibiotics. They weren't separated for long at all. It was relatively cheap too.

Thanks for all the advice fellow goat lovers. I've contacted a vet and just waiting for a call back so hopefully Gordon will be sorted out soon.

A couple of hours of separation will not do any harm, him mating his sister long before she should be and by the wrong male may cause you lots more problems.... you will need to get it sorted asap. Boys are fertile by the time they are three months old!

for this young a kid it may actually be easier for the vet to do it under gas&air in the surgery, and he won't feel a thing. Cheaper for you too, bring him in in a big dog crate.

My vets castrate for £16. Done with local anaesthetic. Done and dusted in matter of minutes.
