Title: Two Golden Geurnsey Goats - Near Shotts
Post by: NethertonSH on June 07, 2016, 04:20:44 pm
Back up for grabs with regret, our two Golden Geurnsey billy goats Ollie and Loui. They are just over a year old. Our fences aren't up to the job of keeping them in so we need to find a new home ASAP. They must stay together as they have never been apart. Important that they go to the right home.

I can deliver within a reasonable distance.

Are these two boys by any chance the ones that the SSPCA has just picked up near Armadale????

Why do you think that any other goatkeeper will be able to keep them contained?

Honestly - given the time of year, they will be curry before you know it...

Yes that was them hence the reason we've decided to find a new home for them.

I'm sure they're not the only goats that can jump so I'd expect someone with higher or electric fences could keep them contained. If it comes to it I'll just have to heighten our fences.

Goat curry has been considered!

Are these still intact?   I find an electric strand on top of tbe fence helps.   Have they enough grass and browsing?   Goats browse. Bushes and trees and quite often thats why tbey get out.   Try putting ash sycamore or willow branches invthe fueld to keeo them occupied.

Not good time to be selling,  as a festival on,  amd male goats will be in demand for this.   I have taken mine off tbe market for  this  reason.

If they  are castrated,  they have more chance of a home,  and also staying together.

Yes they are intact. They have tonnes of grass and browsing. Most of time they're quite happy sitting around the sheds and steading, we had just began to accept they prefer being around about us rather than in their field. It wasn't a problem until yesterday they decided to go for a wander further afield when we were away.

If I've not had any interest by the end of the week I'm just going to take a trip to the fencing supplier and spend a few days raising fences a foot. I think the problem is we just had some fencing done around their field but its post and rail and rylock so they use the rails (along with the old stone dykes) to hop over.

We have them in the shed at the moment and they're loving climbing about the straw and hay bales.

Last chance before I go to work on the fences! These two boys are free to a good loving home.

Just thinking, how about a strand of electric tape at nose level set in from the fence / wall, to keep them away from it so they don't then climb?

Yes I thought that would be a good idea but my wife isn't convinced.  She'd rather I just built Hadrian's wall around the place.

My first plan is to raise the fences a foot by just adding an extra top wire or two, possibly adding some colored cable ties to make it obvious to them. If that doesn't work (which come on, they're only goats) then I'll add an electric wire or tape like you suggested.

The only thing they haven't shown any interest in climbing is the nice climbing frame/fort I built for them!

Hadrian's Wall won't help you.  My sheep use it like a road :/

To be fair Sally, Hadrian has been a little lax on repair and upkeep for a few hundred years.

Can she get the Mexicans goats to pay for it?
