Title: Quails not laying yet....
Post by: curios on May 07, 2010, 06:32:58 pm
We bought some coturnix quails a few weeks back they were five weeks old then and are about eight and a half weeks now. We had four hens (definitely used visual clues initially and confirmed with foam test)  amongst the birds we bought these were seperated and have a large hutch with a mix of a wood shavings, and a compost area for scratching in, as well as a dust bath, and in the closed part of the hutch they he woodshavings and hay. They have been fed on layers mash and layers pellets with treats of mealworms, fatballs, and garden insects. I have read that quail start to lay at seven weeks but there is no sign of eggs at all. Are we being unduly impatient or are we doing something wrong? We live in Southwest UK.

bear in mind the 'moving' to a new home is quite traumatic, and would probably delay laying as well.
Its sounds like they're being well look after

Be patient a little longer, before getting too worried!

we got our 2nd batch of quail last autumn, so had to wait til nearly easter before they laid (before them we had one hen and two cocks, so just one egg at a time!)
