Finding alternatives to bagged feed is both an art and a science and one I don't have the time or inclination for.  I just alsonfeed a little mixed grain in the afternoon so they get trained to come to call, which makes it much easier to catch them or shut them up when necessary.

Mine dine on bruised barley which is readily available around my area. It's usually a feed for cattle/sheep etc but the hens love it. Basically it's barley that's been through a roller to squash and split it open. My local feed distributor sells it for £120 a ton.
