Title: Pig arc advice requested
Post by: Paul and Caroline on March 17, 2016, 08:35:45 am
Hi

Can anybody advise us on the optimum size for a pig arc to house four weaners please? I have read that too big a house may encourage soiling inside it by the pigs.....
Many thanks

For four weaners to pork weight you'd get away with 6ft x 4ft BUT this limits you if things change (maybe next time you'll want to do 6?)
I'd suggest getting a 6 x 8 or 8 x 10 arc and reducing the available space inside using bales of straw and pallets or hurdles - this will give you a bit more flexibility in the longer term  ;)

I'd agree about not restricting yourself for the future, the straw bales could be a good idea but you could just see those distributed in and out of the arc within a day ha ha
Pigs are pretty good at going outside for the loo, i had one last month that wasn't too well, he's in a 8x12' arc with 7 others but as soon as he was up and about he left the arc to do his business.

If they dung inside just shovel it outside away from the arc and spray the area in the arc with something like diluted Jeyes Fluid to kill the smell and deter them from thinking this is their dunging spot.
