Title: Strange question about washing up liquid
Post by: Bionic on January 06, 2016, 06:53:49 pm
When doing the washing up this evening OH was telling me that when he was young he remembers the post lady bringing round samples of squeezy washing up liquid with the post.
What did they use before washing up liquid to do the dishes?

My mum had a bar of a strong smelling soap, it was green I think and I am sure it was used for just about everything.

A friend of mine always used washing soda crystals like her mother did. They might have cleaned the pots but they weren't that kind to the skin.

There were blocks of green fairy household soap?
There is a herb called bouncing bet? Saponaria? Gives a bit of a soapy mix when rubbed with water.
I seem to think carbolic was a browny yellow ?
There was probably something on Victorian Farm  :)

Green soap rubbed onto a dish cloth and scalding hot water, I remember.

Devonlady - I think you are right. My father (Aged 90) talks about "kitchen soap" which was green and was used for everything in the kitchen. Including the dishes.

OK, can someone click on the link, just above the picture there is the author and a date, either it's my computer bringing a previous viewed page or my computer is having a wobble :-).
I've stopped getting magazines because I was getting the feeling everything was so similar to previous issues/years, esp gardening, same stuff year in year out .
