Well I finally picked up the cockerel today, he is gorgeous and a doddle to handle. The lady gave me two to choose from and I chose the best looking one, am not sure whether the other was for the pot but oh well..... I am going to introduce him to the girls tomoz, under close supervision of course. Hopefully if I can get some pics onto the computer of him I will upload them here; he really is striking and gorgeous to boot. Very happy! :)

Sweet little chap. What breed is he?
I picked up a new Wyandotte cockerel earlier this year and like you was given a choice of two. The prettiest was a total nutcase, probably because he lived a solitary life in a 3' x 2' box inside a shed with just a window at the front. So did the other, but he hadn't gone mad! He enjoyed his freedom so much that he started doodling as soon as I put him in the back of the car. Later he struggled with agoraphobia, but he's settled in fine now.
Worth thinking about that run surface. In conditions like that he will develop foot problems quickly.

yea I know I'll have to sort it out. He is a salmon faverolle, pure bred and he is so quiet too.

Mud is awful this year, usually not this bad until late Jan. I bought 6 bales of straw to chuck in our main pen yesterday. Just cut the string and they spread it for you. It won't last long but it does form a mat for a while before they stomp it in. Get me through Xmas I hope when I can shift them all. Hate chickens on mud but it's hard work with our weather sometimes. Looking at a BIG polytunnel for next year to house them Nov to end of feb and let them out when it's nice and the ground is dry / frozen.
