I arranged one of these a few years ago for a handfull of local members but I am wondering about casting the net a bit further
What does anyone think of the idea of a get together in Yorkshire on 23rd April 16 to visit the rare breed livestock and poultry show and sale at the York Auction Centre?
You wouldn't have to live in Yorkshire to attend as there are lots of motels, hotels and dog friendly B and Bs close by for those who wanted to stay over.
There is the museum of farming next door, Elvington Air museum down the road and a feed merchants and equine store across the street as well as the historic cities of York and Beverly to visit for those who want to make a weekend of it.
So plan A could be that a group of us meet for an early morning fry up ( before it gets too busy) and then check out the auction before another snack break and depart
OR
plan B which would be a rummage round the auction, do your own thing in the afternoon and meet up for a meal in the evening.
What do you think?

Sounds like a lovely idea in theory :-)
I'd need to check the date a bit closer to the time.
-
Lovely idea but I can't usually get away in March or April due lambing.
-
No way I can get away at that time of year, especially not o/night. Sorry, I think it will be peak lambing time/gardening time/kidding time for most of us....
-
First thoughts WOW YES, then realised, like others, just no time spare in spring, can't commit to anything, last year I had to drop out of something at the last minute because of goat problems, but great idea, if we can't do it then is there anything more into summer time? Days longer and hopefully goats/sheep/garden pressures off?
Put this up again nearer the day and see how things go?
-
I dont mind when we do it. Or what we do. My lambing is Feb/ March so apart from hopefully farrowing in late April / May I'm pretty flexible.
I only suggested the rare breed sale as I thought it might make the trip to York a bit more worthwhile. Sounds like its too early in the year for most of you though.
-
I hope to go to the sale and would love to meet other forum members. Depending how she lambs I may have a sheep there to sell.
-
If I can I'd love to get there, daren't buy anything though, or I may have to move in with them ::)
-
Ok
so how about those of you who are free pencil in a butty and a brows on the 23rd. We can firm up a time to meet in the cafeteria via a post on here the day before.
Closing date for entries is the 8th April so the catalog will be out around the 15th I recon.
I will have a few ewes with lambs at foot to sell myself this year Buttermilk but I have never put mine through the auction so would be interested to see how yours get on. Last year some breeders were withdrawing Ryelands that didnt make their £120 reserve while others were selling the smaller type ewes with twin lambs at foot for £80.
Mine are worth more as meat boxes but it all comes down to who is there on the day. ;D
Pennine I am happy to confiscate trailers and cheque books if that helps. ;)
-
If my sheep have lambed by then, I would be interested... won't know until nearer the time, but I will pencil it in... great idea BTW ....
-
Lambing permitting I will be there for the day
-
It's a bit too near kidding time for me, I'm afraid, although I like the idea of a meet up.
-
Let see how the coffee and cattle meet goes in April then MGoM and then see if a summer solstice get together is viable for those who cant make the spring date or who have to travel from further a field.
-
Ok

That wouldn't help, I drive a van ;D
and then see if a summer solstice get together
Dancing round a bonfire? ;)
-
Dancing round anything is a no-no for me, but I can wheel in time to the music. :roflanim:
-
no nudie bonfire dancing Im afraid but the more sensible ones amongst you may be allowed to wave a sparkler providing you wear the appropriate H and S gear and complete a risk assessment form. :-J
Oh lets be honest guys......there isn't going to be a sensible one amongst you now is there ::)
-
No fireworks for me I have a dread of sparklers after a friend got set on fire when we were six. There are tales of nude dancers in a local wood one year, the poor chap who came across them was traumatised and had to revisit the scene every year until his death, he never found them again though.

Hang on, I only said dancing round a bonfire, I wouldn't dream of subjecting anyone to a certain sight :o. :)

I would love to meet up with you but we are away between 15 - 28 April. Available most other dates.
