Our 12 Christmas geese have always been dispatched and dressed by a local farmer. This year, rather than taking them to his farm (which is a 60 minute journey) he suggested that we met at the local market (a 20 minute journey) and moved them from one trailer to another in the car park. This worked really well. We had just ushered them into his trailer when another farmer came up and told us that what we were doing was contrary to regulations. He suggested that we leave quickly before any of the officials saw us.
We did leave, but I'm not sure what we had done wrong. Can anyone enlighten us?

Can't think: I don't think poultry are subject to a standstill period or anything. Or are there new restrictions due to Avian 'flu?
Maybe it is considered bad form to use the mart for trading other than through the mart (it usually is) and this guy thought you were selling him your geese?

Can't see it being a problem as far as the regs are concerned, after all that is what happens at a mart, livestock in, livestock out. Most likely the proprietors wouldn't like any deals being done without them getting a cut.

Hmmmm...
I suspect you are both right. Although we weren't selling them, I can see that it might look like that. Perhaps we should find a lay-by next year. ::)
