Now this may sound silly but I got a surprise yesterday when a light aircraft flew over our area, reason being its been so quite without any planes. We are on the flight path for the R.A.F. and normal flights. This plane was flying low, maybe checking for ash who knows. I feel very sorry for the poor country's who send their fruit and veg by plane they will suffer a great deal as their crops rot. I understand why people are upset at losing holidays etc but when you take time to think of the impact this will have long term on jobs, small business its a scarey thought.

Yes, I saw a helicopter yesterday afternoon. I thought the ban was on ALL aircraft? I think there are going to be long term repercussions on top of those already caused by the recession.
-
the ban only applied to commercial aircraft Annie . No legal restriction at all on small private light aircraft , just a warning !!! but they can fly if they want too.
It has been noticeably quiet even out here in the sticks....no white lines across the sky , or that distant rumble that is always there ....and no RAF jets screaming over at zero level .... RESULT ...
cheers

I said to my OH it was weird looking at a totally clear sky over the weekend, must be the first time since the invention of flying?
Agree regarding the fruit etc, however i saw that Tescos have been relocating everything to Spain and driving it up. without being a moaner, this wouldnt be a problem if the supermarkets supported our own producers and we actually ate what is in season, just a thought.

Hello agen Just a thought I would think an aeroplane that has a fourstroke engine system would hardly be bothered as the airfilters prior to the carburettors would stop the dust.Jet engines don't have this luxury they just consume massive amounts of air straight through and this volcanic ash must be like grinding paste on the compressors and fan systems. There was one pratt moaning on the radio this morning about not being able to go on holiday.Think what he would say should he be able to speak after his jumbo had landed in the middle of the Atlantic some folk are unbelievable in my opinion and of course it would have been the tour opperators fault for letting it take off !!!

Thats not moaning Winslow Porker thats common sense! :apple: :blackberry: :pear:

My mother was whineing also, supposed to be flying to works apartment for her birthday today, on which i said "would you go if they said you could? " she obviously said no and i told her to stop moaning, i dont want you dead!!!
I do feel for the people who got a bargin holiday for £500 and got stuck abroad, eventually getting home with there holiday totaling £5000 :o

If Tesco could buy something cheaper on Mars they would jump through hoops to secure a deal on the product.
We all know their ethics towards suppliers, so why are folk still using them ???
I can remember in the 70's when we couldn't get bananas in the winter or my mum getting excited about the Cyprus potatos that was a sole import in the local co-op.
The only way back to using local produce only would be if the government put an import ban on produce that was freely available in our own country..... which would never happen, as the supermarkets are too powerfull !!!

Tell you what Jackie is going to become an authority on Helicopters I don't know about aircraft after she takes up her new residence.Perhaps she will tell us about them when she gets straightened up and moved in. :farmer:

I saw some guy whingeing about how he'd had to drive through two countries, take a bus across another, hitch hike some miles to a port, and sail home to Englandshire before getting the train 'up the road' to Alba.
That sounds like a lovely holiday to me. ;D

The recent news on flying throws up some interesting information regarding our dependency on planes.
They pollute the earth, are totally responsible for global warming, don't pay enough tax/pay to much tax, etc. etc.
Over Europe (EU plus some adjacent bits) there are 28,000 flights a day. Most days, the same number take off as land!
Given that number of flights, the ATC caution when the ash arrived is quite understandable. Even if only 0.01% of flights suffered, there could have been several crash landings (or worse) a day unless some caution was exercised. It looked like overkill (bad choice of words), but may have prevented many accidents until the situation was properly assessed.
As well as providing transport for business, family trips, and holidays, most flights by airliners also carry a lot of freight. There are also freighter aircraft which transports fruit, veg, pills, animals (breeding stocks of cattle, pigs, horses, etc.). Airfreight has been growing at around 15% pa compared to passenger travel at 5% until the recent down turn.
The latest jet engines are more efficient than the diesel engines used in cars, lorries and buses. A full airliner uses less fuel per passenger than a car carrying only the driver, particularly on long haul flights where the plane is at high altitude for more of the journey.
Until we work out another way to move a lot of people round the world, or get people to stop travelling, planes are pretty good at providing an important part of modern life.
It was good to stand outside and NOT have planes crackling and roaring their way across the sky though!
