Title: Our new Shetland ram
Post by: Roxy on November 05, 2015, 01:12:15 pm
Long trek down to the Lincolnshire Wolds for our new ram.  He will be going out at weekend with some of the Gotland ewes.  Already excited about what the fleece will be like.  He seems a quiet fellow, so that's good.

Is he polled?
Just curious as I thought shetlands were horned as rams.

You can get polled ones as well, although - I don't know why actually - only very few people breed them. I think horns give them a more "tup"like face....

I have an old Shetland and he is horned.  I had a choice of 2 rams, and one was light coloured and horned.....big curled horns.  My Gotlands are polled, and to be honest, as its me feeding and handling the sheep, and although even a polled ram can give a nasty bump if he catches you, I decided I would rather a polled ram, and also liked his colour.  He does have a rather wrinkled face, and reminds me of a bulldog.  We will see what the lambs turn out like .......hopefully without the wrinkled face.
