Title: Chick hatched, missing eye and squint beak.
Post by: lunanlife on March 25, 2010, 01:39:15 pm
Anyone any ideas on this one? Chick hatched from a Light Sussex Cock and a Indian Game hen. There was no right eye and the beak was not straight. Looked like it had been squished.

just a birth defect. we have a bad tempered maran with one eye. he can function very well without it. however it would probably be best to cull your chick.

Ah! Don't! he might surprise you and live to a ripe old age!

I wouldn't cull if it was just the eye, but the squint beak would make me wonder if it would be able to eat well enough to survive

I was going to cull it straight away but decided to put it in the brooder. It is actually one of the most lively chicks. Will give it a day to see if it is managing to eat and drink before taking final action. Thanks for clearing the issue up for me. We have never had that happen before.

I would continue and see how it gets on.  Keep us posted.
