As title.
Thanks
-
Yes I would say so certainly round here anyway, I paid £40 each for last lot
-
Where are you? I don't know how the seller is even covering thier costs. They are a bargain.
-
I sell comfortably at £45
-
That is very cheat! how do they cover there costs?
-
Thanks I thought it was a good price as well.
A well established place, with a good reputation, so i am very condifident about them
-
That's a steal I paid65 for my girls registered.
-
They're a bargain. I paid £40 last year.
-
I am not getting htem this year, still doing my research hence this other thread

So I now hope to get some hands on experince, and maybe progres to get a couple next year, appox Late April/May.
My reason being, 2 fold
1 best weather / season window
2 we have quite a lot of apple trees / apples that I would like to feed them up on before dispatch.
Steady and sensible progression I think I am making.

We were exactly the same as you. It took us 3 years before we took the plunge.
-
£30 is astonishingly cheap - I would be suspicious. What kind of set-up are they coming from?
-
private small holding / plant nusery. They are well know in the local area.
Why is £30 "astonishingly cheap " when others have said £40, that is not much of a difference?
Some people do it for the love of the animals not money.
-
Even with a love of the animals most people try to cover their costs;or the hobby becomes a burden.
-
I certainly don't do this for the money!! ;D
The difference between £30 and £40 may be only a tenner, but pig producers operate on exceptionally tight margins. This is especially the case with rare breed or pedigree breeders. A hobby farmer or a business operating pigs as a sideline producing maybe one litter a year can afford to sell at that price, but an extra £10 for a farmer selling maybe 40 weaners a year from five or six litters is £400 (obviously!) and for many crofters and smallholders that's the difference between loss and break-even (we can only dream of profit). We sell fatteners for £45 and registered pedigree stock for £65.
If this is a source you trust, I'd be straight in there because it's a great price - £60 instead of £80 for a pair gives you £20 left over for about three bags of feed which will see you comfortably through the first month of pig-keeping.
I only advised caution after an advert in the paper here in Orkney, offering weaners for £15. Curious, I called and they couldn't even tell me what breed they were. I have developed a 'too good to be true' alarm system!

:pig:it would seem very cheap to me, you should be able get at £45 easily
