Title: Monty Don - Is it just me....?
Post by: HeronsReach on March 10, 2010, 10:10:03 pm: I cant put my finger on it, but I just cant get away with the guy. I understand what he's trying to do with the smallholder programme, but he just doesnt' do it any justice what so ever. Its the same with Mastercraft, it could be sooo much better if it was presented by a more credible and beleivable person. Maybe i'm being too harsh

Personally, I like Monty ;) I think he's a very gentle person, find his presenting style reassuring and friendly and I think with all the problems he's had in his personal life he's doing well for himself - who are we to down him for that ? :-[
I'm not for a minute saying everyone should like him, of course that's just plain silly - it'd be like expecting everybody to like me :P Different strokes for different folks ;D

Post by: sagehen on March 11, 2010, 10:43:31 am: I do like Monty, and the dream farm programme, mainly because he is pretty realistic in what is needed to keep a farm alive, especially if you've sunk your savings into it and want to make it work as a business. A lot of people have romanticised views about keeping animals etc and the reality is pretty different, and I respect him for telling some of them that they are just not cut out for such a life, especially if they don't want to muck in. I'm not sure if that counts as condescending - in my view, he's doing them a favour in the long run.

Been there, got the T-shirt so Not this time thanks, but I STILL love Monty. His nature is a lot like my John's was.

If he were to show us HIS succsesfull smallholding and how HE does things then it would be a whole lot more more credible. All he does is talk the talk. I cant see any credible evidence that says Ive had 20+ years of experiance of smallholding and i've had the pit falls and learning along the way to prove it.

And to be blunt he's just an ex jewerly maker and ex drug adict who's stumbled from TV programme to TV programme, a bit like Alan Titchmarch ending up a chat show host WTF?

What I want see is a gnarley handed farmer or smallholder who actually knows what he talking about and doesnt just bring in experts to SHOW people how to do things. I've never seen the guy lift a finger to help them or show them

I also think that most of the people picked for this programme you wouldnt trust with a cat, let alone ten acres and sheep and pigs!

Pay me Montys wages and i'll go and shout at them and tell them what a bunch of wassocks they are!! Easy peasy

I want to see proper farming with everything that goes wrong AND goes right, not some flowered up twaddle for people who think the countrysides a massive play ground.

From what I've seen of the programs they ARE a bunch of dim witted idiot's, they pick 'em to make him look good!

Have you never researched him? He has been in farming for over 40 years

Just don't get me started on how I can't afford a house with land 'cos of all the people who buy the houses with an acre or two of land only spend the next 20 years running a drive-on lawnmower over it >:( ???.

Perhaps his drive comes from the fact that he was close to death with anorexia, perhaps he realises that you have to grasp life with both hands and do the best you can. Hes not there to show the rest of us how its done, but to inspire people who want to change theyre lifestyle in the future.And no i dont fancy him ;D I find Kate humble far more annoying, she seems very nice, but god she makes me dizzy ::)

I was that person! ::) :'( Before I knew any better. ::) At least we had some sense and let the fields out to our local farmers who became very good friends, and taught us a great deal. We would be phoned(sometimes in the middle of the night) to come and help with the calving or lambing, or to help round up escapees, or to help move cattle. And on one occasion our champion show dog found what Elizabeth thought was going to be a dead calf - the day after she had moved the herd to another field. She was a very much alive and very large girl that her Mum had abandoned after a difficult and unnoticed birth, she had had milk until the night before so had survived by moving around when teh men went looking fro teh body. Flash went out and in 20 seconds went on point. When we sent him in to flush what we thought must be a pheasant there was avery loud growling roar from her. We phoned Elizabeth and she shot over armed with a couple of hefty farmhands, and it took them and John all their strength to get this unwilling youngster into the trailer. Flash was the hero of the day.
