is it ok to wash goats with horse shampoo?

Why do you want to wash your goat? Its very easy for a goat to catch a chill at this time of year, so I would not recommend it really. People who show goats, and indeed, us with horses, do wash them in the summer before a show. But weather is usually a lot warmer.
I have never washed any of my goats, and don't think they would take to being washed!!

milly loved it i washed them cos i dont know when they were last washed by previous
owners and doing it with their best intentons.
just looking after them as best as i can.
thanks for commenting about possibly been to early in year to wash.
also they are scratching and nibbling at their coats so i thought they may have lice so i went
and washed them again with their best interest.
so is it ok to be using the horse shampoo?

:DAh .....you think the goat may have lice, so are using the shampoo to get rid of them ....not cos you want a brilliant white goat!!
In that case, the shampoo will not get rid of the lice, but of course make the goats coat smell good. What you need is Farmyard Louse powder, which can be used on all livestock. I have the organic stuff. You can get it from the animal feed shop usually. Its the time for lice, Cain and Abel have just been done with the powder, as they had rubbed bald patches on the top of their backs. I always give a second application of the powder, to make sure the lice are gone. But it works.
If you goat likes a bath then carry on, but I would do it when its warmer weather, and the sun out so she can dry.
Spot on, the dog de flea stuff, can be used on goats. You would need to use the large dog amount though. We use it on our horses feathers, the hairy bits round the hooves, as with all that hair they tend to get harvest mites. We know they have it cos they stamp, and chew their hair on the legs. Its stops it. Also use flower of sulphur mixed to a paste, which can be got at agriculural and feed shops, that is good for fleas and irritation.
If you part the hair on your goat, and look carefully, you will see the lice. You will need to do both goats. Don't worry about you - they will only live on the goats!!!!

the horse shampoo says for lice also ladie who sold it said it would treat goats,
dont know if i was dull enough to buy! please put me right.
if it wont effect the lice i shall buy that stuff you said about.

I would have waited til it was a bit warmer to wash them as well. I don't wash anything until well into April or May. I agree with everything Roxy says about the other things you can use- I use "Spot on" (the sheep kind, which you can get in a bigger bottle) here generally. In fact I have just dosed Surf, who is due in 3 weeks. She tends to get scabby heels, and the spot on keeps her clear. But you are not supposed to use it on milking goats, so I do her in Autumn when she is dried off and in spring before she kids. Dunno what I'll do when I run her through!

If the shampoo says its for lice then thats fine Langdon - but I still say its not warm enough yet, so I would save that for the glorious summer weather we are going to have .....hopefully!

sorry for asking this question so late roxy
but what are you suppost to do about the lice if you cant wash till april may?
im sure they have been treated with the wash that they had, i dried them really well
with a towel is well.
just curious thats all.

Spot on is a pour on used for sheep, it will kill the lice off (as stated above by Ballingall) ;)

just read a topic just now bout lice treatment and it got me thinking again about what we bought,
sorry for bringing it up again, but i just want to know that what we are using will do the job for
milly and molly.
its dermoline insecticidal shampoo for horses.
what do you think?
i will be getting spot on in the future.

Dermoline is fine- I have used it before as well. I used to use it on the BA to try and get rid of the dandruff. Funny how black goats seem to get dandruff worse!

do goats normally bite, nibble at thei coats even after been treated for lice,
is this a kind of grooming thing,cos i dont want to rush in there and give them another
dose if not needed,
sorry for dragging this out :(

they do nibble at themselves to groom. It could be that- I would wait rather than rush in and do something else.
