MY INCUBATOR ARRIVED TODAY!! V excited... its been an "on, off, on, off" plan for a while, and finally back on! Only ordered it Saturday night with o/h's bank card!
Waiting now for more eggs to arrive, via Royal mail as only 4 of our girls run with a cockerel, and they don't lay every day.

ours is auto, via a sticky-on motor-thingy, I've bought Maran eggs (my grandad used to keep them) and gold laced wyandottes. ours are warrens with a black silkie cockerel (Yes, get the jokes done now...!)
When our quail decide its spring, we'll try their eggs, and Im determined to try ducks (cos ducklings are just brilliant!)
Husband (I just help) is going to build a brooder pen & chook house, after he's finished the guinea pig & rabbit hutches, and repairs on the goat shed!
-
does he fancy a working holiday on our place!!!!
-
can i join in as my duck eggs are going in the incy in the morning?
-
Of course... tell us more!
-
thank you - i feel like part of the group now!
bought a dozen aylesbury eggs from ebay at the weekend and they arrived today. surrently sitting in the kitchen waiting to get to 'room temperature' and they'll go in the incy tomorrow...very exciting! tho yours will all be hatched before mine as duck eggs take 28 days i believe.
no idea where they'll live but sure hubby can get busy in the next 28 days!!!
-
lol welcome ;)
-
little blue wat shall we call our club now that there is more than two it need a name ;)
-
I got my incylast week off eBay but was broken. Waiting for replacement then I'm ordering 6 light Sussex to start flock number 2. Not going to run them with the ex bats.

Why not? I do. Am I missing something? They seem to get on fine - they just act as one flock, with big LS Jamie in charge.
-
yes why apart from wanting pure light sussex.
-
I keep thinking of an incubator, but with all my broody bantams, usually that keeps me busy enough chick wise.
Little Blue, my bantam eggs should all be fertile, got a nice selection of colours ....buff laced, silver pencilled, blue laced, in fact all sorts of colours. You are welcome to have some of these eggs, after your hen eggs have hatched .....by which time the banties will all be broody and not laying any more probably .....but give me a shout if you want some!!

We have just bought some quails eggs to eat and try, if they are nice i might be begging you for some of your eggs for my incubator. We have had a great success with the incubator it is addictive, we have now hatched 19 kharki campbells (2 batches) and we have a further 12 kharki campbells in and one of the girls has 6 white call duck eggs in with my campbells. This is great, we are loving it....

Hi Annie. vet told me not to put any new ones with the ex bats as they might pass diseaseabout something to do with poor immune systems. I wanted to keep seperate anyway as want to hatch a few LS eggs from these in future so need to know they are LS. I plan to buy in a cockeril you see.
-
Have you kept them all, Lavinia? I LOVE quail eggs in mayo with nutmeg on top

Thankyou, yes if we manage to organise meeting up, that would be lovely!
We want to try all kinds of chooks, just for the experience & see how well they settle.
Then ducks.... !

I cant wait... will I be patient enough?!
Quail eggs are great - I've sold them at work to people with small children, so they can have there very own child-sized fried egg!!
I'll trade quail eggs for aylesbury ducks, what do you reckon?!
-
ooh now that sounds tempting!!!!
-
My bantie eggs are tiny, but I bet quail eggs are really diddy!!!
-
well I candled my 12 ebay duck eggs last night and ELEVEN of them are fertile and growing away like they are supposed to! Even better than I'd hoped.........can't wait to see what they next 3 weeks bring......

Helencus said : "I plan to buy in a cockeril you see."
What a pity you are far away from me in Aberdeenshire as I have a Light Sussex cockerel currently needing a new home from last year's hatch. He was on parole with my friend but I think has just moved onto death row. :-\
-
We wanted Call Ducks 'til we found out how noisy they are!!! We have neighbours in close proximity and because they already have to deal with our 2 very noisy cockerills, we felt that having Call Ducks would be a step too far. We decided on Khaki Campbells and Indian Runners instead as they are quieter and their egg yield is better... Good luck!
-
Darn joyofchicks that is a shame I'd be happy to give a home to him but it is a bit far. :( I have had my eBay eggs in for 2 days now. 12 LS and 6 silver welsummer. I'm hoping things go well but lots of folks on here are saying there's aren't going, fingers crossed we get a few at least.
-
please remember eggs off ebay are not a garantee .try and get eggs next day see haw far the eggs have com iff you pay for 2 lots thats 20 pound .local market farm market are 5 pounds a tray iff you loose half its still better .over christmas we seen 6 gold lace orpingtons go for 180 pounds i had the job to hatch them ..1 hatched light sussex reported it youv left feed back no action . 2 weeks ago i bought 12 chocklate orpingtons for a order 120 pounds as we was unpacking the kids broke 1 fell off the bench i pickt it up a red ring in the egg .they had been in a incubater before .....best bet local or colect or day out sunday and pic up
-
I have bought eggs from ebay and found them to be fine 60/40 success rate, local sales can work out expensive as well, but take your chances there. or go along and chat with the sellers at the market and get a deal on some fertile eggs from them at least you will know where they come from and that they are fresh.
i use the Rcom suro20 which i have had a ot of success from, if i can help in anyway please give me a shout....... [email protected]

Hi Jock, how did teh sale go today?
-
Thanks Qwolf much appreciated

Eggs are pipping to us!
switched the turner off the other day, and today they started cheeping and rocking when we did the whole baby-talk "hello chooky chickies!" thing!
keeping them moist with a spray, so the membrane doesn't dry up on them.
Def 1 Warran x silkie (One I'm not sure is fertile) and at least 3 out of 6 cuckoo marans....
Im so excited!
-
first chick nearly out!!
Its a black one, like its daddy (Silkie warren X)
We've had a chocalate egg each to celebrate! Easter chicks...
-
Happy Easter little blue! Hopefully if all fertile ones hatch ok we should have 11 on Tuesday. 10 light sussex but only 1 fertile silver duckwing welsummer. Still if that hatches cock or hen it'll be a nice mix with the Light Sussex. It's properly Easter with chicks ;D
-
good luck for tuesday, I'm going up to check on my babies now... !
-
;)went to the garage this morning and all i could here was chicks they were not due for another 2 days 4 so far and a heap more pipped so fingers crossed.
my 3 year old grandaughter could not belive her eyes, we brought a new incubator last year with a glass front so the grandchildren can see the hatch, it was worth its money to see her eyes light up, 3 year old grandson will be coming over soon to have a peep :)
-
It's exciting stuff! OH is just making the brooder now and I'm off to the countrystore to get a lamp and chick crumbs.
-
:'( :'(
Poor chicks, only one hatched - had the sack still attached and struggled, died last night.
Others all silent today, we opened the eggs... 3 dead in shell.
rest infertile.
Shells were really tough, but no evidence of the chicks even trying to break out.
Any sugggestions appreciated.
-
dillon here 21days tomorrow everybody excited fingers crossed we have 6 barnveldar eggs in our incubator :dog:
-
HI

-

-

Are these ducks? Chickens should have hatched on day 21 ish
-
DONT FORGET IL SEND YOU THE NEXT LOT OFF EGGS ALL THE BEST ON THE HATCH
-
Little Blue,
Sounds like the humidity wasn't quite right... Do you have a humidity control on your incubator?
-
no control, we kept one of the possible 2 troughs full-ish throughout, and sprayed as they began pipping, drained most of the trough to prevent them falling in & drowning.
Wondered if the spraying might have baked the shells, or filled the air sack?
We had 2 warrenXsilkies of our own (one hatched then died) and 6 cuckoo Marans via the internet (half fully formed but died in shell)
Ive got a hygrometer (?!) humidity measurer ordered....
-
you can get dirt cheap temp and humidity monitors for a few quid. i have two both read diffrent as long as its somewhere near were its meant to be then i am happy.
-
Little Blue keep trying its is worth it when you succeed, we have another 7 khaki campbells hatched. So excited plus we purchased 10 hubbards from Andrew at the weekend so it is all go here......
-
oh we are... 24 chicken eggs set today!
Fingers crossed
I love ducklings..
