Title: Lambing live
Post by: daniellestocks on March 08, 2010, 06:22:39 pm
So did anyone watch lambing live lastnite?
I found it very interesting, i dont really no much about sheep, it is typical how the sheep dont lamb when wanted tho  ;D its always the case!
Good job they have lots of prerecorded stuff to show!

there were a great many sets of tups balls filmed, I thought!!

I've sky+ it!
I watched some of it but it looks too laid back to be a "real" lambing!! No mad rushes, or the mad panic to check everyone has water and hay! Or the mad 3 minutes trying to revive a weak lamb!
Maybe that's just our farm!!!

I'm watching it now and it looks good.  The Farmer looks like he's taken to many drugs in the past - he's almost horizontal! ;D

Great programme,,,,i have no intention of keeping sheep,,,,but liked it all the same,,,,especially Kate Humble :yum: :yum:

Its good to see more programmes like this appearing recently....gives us mad folk something to watch with "interest" rather than phone in dance/sing competitions  ???

I agree though MR Bevan is sooooo laid back....wonder whats growing in his polytunnel ;D :D ;D

Yes been watching it with my OH who does not know that much about sheep although he has helped me lamb a ewe. I do think it is good for the public to see what a farmer does, how much thought and work goes into sheep and lambs. Bearing in mind a lot of children and people only see lamb in the supermarket. I would no be surprised if all the lights TV crew etc put the sheep off and they wait until all is quite. Also good to show the life and death and how much it affects the farmers. As it is an all year round job, often 24, 7 caring for all farm animals maybe the public will think a bit more on where their food comes from but don't hold your breath. :sheep:

Sabrina A local school approached Dave and asked if they could bring a class of 8/9 year olds to the Estate to see some animals. The stock manager asked this little chap Do you know where your milk comes from/Yes he replied Netto its 99p there and £1.53 at the other supermarkers.Next time Dave He is the Estates farms manager George do you have time to assemble some where does it come from DVD's for me When these kids come I can give the teacher some and they can look at them at school. We did this and Did Sheep in the field the lambing pens, lambs, taking fat lambs to market and Morrisons butcher make leg o mutton and lamb chops.I had to go to Springthorpe to do milk They only have beef cattle at Brockelsby. No pigs either. When I next see John Godfrey I will ask him if I can go to his unit there is some 30,000 there to choose from.We did sugar beet seed to sugar via the factory at York.I shall have to find out who the new man is at CVF for Ducks Its amazing what the children think things come from Ill do a new page :farmer:

continuing Sabrina When I was at Low Farm A pal came round to help me erect an antenna and brought along his little girl a 6 year old who of course had to go play with the 2 porkers We couldn't find her when it was home time she was asleep with them intheir house it was ever so good Daddy can we come again? they came several times When it was time to kill the pigs I took Alan a joint of pork a fry and some sausages .Later Yolande asked me where I got the sausages from So I explained to her she was most upset and asked Why couldn't you go and get some from the butchers like every one else in stead of killing those lovely pigs I HATE YOU ??? :D :D :farmer:

Didnt realise there were 2 threads! so copied across from the other one!
Yes I'm watching it, I'm surprised Kate Humble seems so naive when she has spent 6 months training at the farm? I understand why she got so upset last night, I still do when soemthing doesnt make it, but the rest of the time she seems a little clueless? I enjoy any programme like that, I admire that couple coping with 900 ewes, I reckon they work bloomin hard!

I think Kate's job will be to represent the general public and ask the questions that they might ask. If you know nothing about a subject and listen to two experts talking about it, chances are you'll know very little more at the end of it, if you haven't got bored and wandered off. It's a bit like reading the farming press - as an instructional tool, it's worse than useless because it's written by people who know, for people who know.

I don't think sheep farmers are Kate's target audience.  :)

I think Kate has to appear to be clueless to explain to most viewers as TV treats viewers with the average age of 8 so the TV top guy said. Kate has several degrees in animal things apparently.

I only saw a part of last nights programme but love the idea of sheep being left alone and doing everything themselves. Less work has got to be good hasnt it?

Well I think it's great it's even got my kids watching and they generally find my programmes boring. I do know nothing about sheep so I'm glad she asks the basic questions because thats what I want to know.

Again I wrote a reply to Jackie and its dissapeared I got a message in red while I was away someone had replied press post and Helen's message is there but not mine Its most frustrating.Try again Jackie I did write before that the only bit of video worth watching was Kate I am all for showing people how things are done( I am not trying to start a quarrel its not their fault they have to live in town (Townies) I appreciate many would not like to live in the country if they were given the chance to them its to quiet Cocks should not crow at day break Peacocks should not scream Tractors should not make a noise and shine its lights through the bedroom window.Effluent settling tanks really should not be allowed to smell.and why are all these bullocks allowed to walk all over the road so I cannot get past on my way to town to get my hair done and nails seen to.NO it don't happen anything like where Kate was Take Godfrey he looks after a mixed flock of some 1500 + sheep on his own bar shearing when the NewZealand chaps come for the shearing. He constructs the lambing pens Lambs the females.Attends to all their needs takes the fat lambs to market every thing He doesn't Pratt about like that program depicts I can tell you. :D :farmer:

When they got the mobile scanner in I wondered what happened to the empty ewes? There must have been some out of 900! I wonder if they take them to the following year? or sell them on?
Also do you really think they hand bottle feed any orphans? I'd have  thought it would be impossible for just the family to manage all that alone.  I bought 2 orpahns last year to accompany a rejected lamb, but I used a bucket feeder.
Enjoying it though, love the info on the rare breeds with Adam and also have barn envy! aren't those buildings fantastic!
It was good to see them swinging the lamb that would not breathe, I know in theory what to do but it was good to see it, looked much harsher than I imagined it to be!

Tell you what Dixie Godfrey doesn't He has like 10gallon drum with tittie bottle teats around the bottom side and pours milk in and the lambs help them selves just a odd one needs attention my the little devils they soon learn hearing what a stick stirring in a plastic pail means :D :farmer:

Good aren't they. The other thing may not happen to our pals on here but in the cattle yards at Brockelsby Martin has to be ever so carefull with the round bales The bulls love to fight them and its a worry that they attack and the spike spears one but it is exciting to see them play and then all the baby calves in the yard have a mini Calgary Stampede in the straw ;D :farmer:

I was talking to the Stock Manager at Brockelsby and he told me about Valiant a big bull that took exception to him looking at one of his girl friends.Martin said he galloped down the cattle Yard at Boundry Farm and cleared a 7 foot high fence first go with Valiant just about to help him out of the yard.Pity I wasn't there with my video camera I would definitely get some one to put it on you tube so we could all have a laugh ??? ::) :farmer:
