Title: INTRODUCTION
Post by: vallan on May 28, 2008, 12:09:55 pm
Hi,
I am about to get my first 3 or 4 hens ,having finally got the henhouse and run set up. I am thinking of getting the new hybrid,"highlines" ,since my main reason for getting hens is as part of my shift to a more self-sufficient life-style. I already try to grow most of my own veg.and fruit,on a small back garden and 1/2 an allotment in the north of Scotland .I thought it would be good to share experiences as I go along, so if anyone  knows anything about Highlines, let me know!

Hi, and welcome.

I'd second what chickengeorge says - get something you like. Don't know about the hiline hybrids - Black Rocks area a good starter and are bred for outdoors. Personally, I like a mix of hens rather than all the same.

Hi welcome, I started with black rocks some years ago.  Since joining this site I have become quite an enthusiast for traditional breeds. Although the egg to hen ratio is lower.

Hi, the first 2 we got were highlines. Came from a commercial unit. Not a great success :o One prolapsed, but got sorted. Then became an egg-eater >:( It's now a "late" hen ;) Got some Blackrocks and a couple of Isa Browns since then. Doing fine. My first thought was all out egg production, but you soon realise you're getting plenty eggs for the family.
Enjoy them that's the main thing
