ive got 6 ixworth cockerals now 1 year old theyve got to go, too noisy, has anyone tried to fatten a 1 year old bird do they put meat on or just fat, they were free range so no breast meat, ive penned them up now in a fattening pen but dont want to feed them about £25 worth of food for no results. i know older ducks just put fat on.

interesting question as we are hatching eggs at mo.
sorry that i dont have an answer as we are new to keeping chucks.
we would like to know the answer to this as well as this is what we will do if we have too many
cockerels.
will keep watching. :chook:

Ive just killed a few 1yr old cockerils, not much on them so just i just skinned them and took away the breasts, we had a yummy stew :yum:

don't see a problem, I just caught up our boy from last year who's been freeranging, must say was happy with how much meat he has on him, will probably confine him for a week or so when the time comes, last older cock bird was yummy.
see rockchicks threads on fattening on practical poultry forum.
