Title: Wooden hurdle suppliers please?
Post by: Buffy the eggs layer on July 10, 2015, 12:15:54 pm
I got a pallet full of wooden hurdles last year from a guy called Davey in the North East that have been great. He made them himself at his workshop and they started at £4.50 for a 4ft one. I found him on ebay at the time but now that I need some more I cant seem to track him down.

I just wondered if any of you had bought from him and still had his contact details?

Maybe he's still there, but not listing anything at the moment.  Are you able to go back in your Ebay history to help track him down and send a message?

Good thinking Womble,

I tried that as OH had dealt with his through hos account but he says all his messages have disappeared!

I may have to just buy them for twice the price from someone else boo hoo!  :'(

Might he have run out of raw materials for now.  I contacted a couple of local hurdle makers and neither will have any available until they cut the hazel in the Autumn.

my son and I ran 6 up yesterday. They cost us about £4 each, are 5ft long and about 4ft high ( didn't intend them to be so high!  :-[ They will certainly keep our little Ryelands in then!) and really meaty, although I can easily lift them myself. We could have made lighter weight ones cheaper.
It only took us about 2 hours and it was really enjoyable.

Tim Tyne has a detailed tutorial in his Sheep for smallholders book. The ones that I had bought were great and cost about the same as it would have been to make them. I dont want to add another few days of work to my ever growing list of jobs but making them is an option.

LOL!
OK, pics when my son gets back from cricket. They were put to their first use today as we rounded up the Ryeland boys for a check over. Worked a treat....I was a bit surprised tbh  ;)
In fairness they are too high. That's down to my bad maths. I was trying to work out how many uprights to get out of a  length of timber so I could get the saw mill to cut to my requirements. They duly did that for me (FOC) but I did the sums wrong and they cut it into 3 pieces when I should have asked for 4. Consequently I could now keep an adult alpaca in!
Never mind...I know for next time.

Hi LRR,

I saw the one you mention on ebay but he adds vat on to the prices quoted and the delivery cost which makes 20 6ft hurdles £221. It may be cheaper to pay Kimbo to make me some  :-J ;) !

There is a good design in the Smallholders D-I-Y (Gold Cockerel) book, I made some a couple of years ago, they are great.  If I ever get a spare second I will make some more. (sorry for bad photo, it seems its the only one i have)
