Title: For those sending meat by post
Post by: Bionic on June 26, 2015, 01:38:33 pm
I have just posted under recipes about a company I received food from today and thought some of you might be interested.
The fresh items, chicken, fish and minced pork, were packed in 'woolcool', which is basically fleece in plastic with some ice packs. The box left the company yesterday evening and was with me at 12.30 today and the ice packs were still frozen.
They urge you to recycle what you have received and some suggestions are, cooling picnics, putting round outside taps, plant compost.

Riverford have been using for for years plus you hand the box back the week after.  I was actually using this fleece over 6yrs ago when I was sending meat in the post. Some companies provide an envelope to send the fleece back. Seems to be a good product.

Yeah we get woolcool packed meat from greenpasturefarms.
We're looking at it for when we want to start sending stuff out by post.

Needless to say i have kept every single scrap i've ever received, used and reused occasionally for keeping food cool.
No doubt will come up with a great permanent use at some point.

Seems silly not to keep given that the cleaning process is the worst thing about wool. here it's been done for you plus processed into manageable slivers

Sounds a great way to do it.

So - the box is lined with felt and the ice packs go inside that? or is the ice, plastic and felt all one thing?

Neither. There was a cupboard box with bits and pieces inside. The stuff that didn't perish so quickly was  in a small cardboard box inside the bigger box i.e. spices, soy sauce, honey, spring onions etc. There was a sealed plastic bag and inside the bag was the cool wool pack which is oblong shape. The ice packs were special plastic bags with liquid (presume water) inside. Like you can buy ice cube bags but with larger quantities of liquid. So the meat, fish and chicken were wrapped upin the cool wool pack, like in a blanket with the ice packs and put inside the plastic bag which was inside the big box. Does that make sense?
