Title: Anyone with unwanted cockerels?
Post by: Roxy on June 16, 2015, 12:32:14 am
Preferably large breeds, under a year old.

I usually have numerous cockerels, but have had to disappoint the man who takes them.  He has asked me if I know of any.  Think he will take as many as he can get - oh, and he does not expect them for free.  He is in the Manchester area, so will collect from not to far from there I assume.

Why does he want them?

:o :o You're not thinking................ :( I used to have all surplus cockerels from someone to feed our large extended family, even a banty cockerel will make a meal for two or three in a casserole or such plus soup from the bones.

Probably not, and we mustn't cast aspersions.

However, there are people out there who will abuse animals, be that for cock or dog fighting or just through plain neglect, so it's important that none of us are naïve about this!

You're right, Womble. Anyone in South Devon with surplus cockerels, wing them my way, I will keep them for a few weeks on free range(ish) corn them up and give them a kind end.

I have known this man quite a while!!  When he first approached me for cockerels we had the cock fighting conversation.  He supplies all the local restaurants with their free range chickens.  He was very up front, and told me to contact the local abbatoir he uses to confirm the birds are killed humanely.  I do not have a problem with the cockerels being eaten - but am certainly not going to let them go for cock fighting.

marsh poultry in carlisle, culls thousands of young cock birds,if the chap would rear them for couple of months could be worthwhile

I wonder how this chap can guarantee that none of the birds have had anything which would make them unsuitable for eating. Or that none are still in a withdrawl period for certain meds.

I dare say he would have to keep them for a fair few weeks to fatten them up. :-\

Will mention the place in Carlisle to him.

All the free range cockerels he has had from me, have led a good organic life, and have all been fat enough to go straight in to be killed.  That's why he keeps calling me.  Had a disastrous year with non hatchings, and non broody hens, so he has been very disappointed. ;D

A white silkie cockerel, shame you're not closer to me.

I live in the expensive home counties and even here it only costs £13-14 to have a bird euthanised by the vet. If you're going to drive somewhere to drop a bird off it may not turn out much cheaper in fuel? Just thinking.

I think fighting cocks are certain breeds bred for just that

Exactly!! They are completely different. I got given a trio from some travellers. Lovely little birds; but the cockerel nearly left a hole in my hand when I picked him up unsuspectingly. And he would have made mincemeat of a cockerel twice his size. Unfortunately the fox got him. (Probably a one eyed fox now.)

They still need to practice, though? Around here it's a public secret that dogs that are stolen or are advertised as 'free for a good home' are used similarly by the gypsies. Ducks have been stolen too. Dead puppies were dumped for a while in one particular road. Then there's live bait, ferret and snake food... My own pot or the vet for me anytime. Never nice, but necessary.
Burg456t, I know it's a very, very slim chance but if you're driving down into Hertfordshire anytime soon we'll despatch the bird for you whilst you're here.

A black skinned chicken is not going to be fit for the restaurant trade, even their meat and bones are dark coloured. We has a silkie cockerel going in the pot once - it was so weird, it looked like something out if The Adams Family...

Gypsies also eat roasted hedgehogs but I have never met one yet that has.

I'm talking about police reports.

Oh I thought you said "public secret".

At the end of the day we all have a responsibility as to what we do with our surplus.  Giving away for free or next to nothing, bearing in mind that is sometimes the worth,  will always attract that element in our society that will then exploit the situation for their own gain etc. I'm afraid those people come from all walks of life.

In the current climate which seems to be all about different cultures and our reactions to them I don't really care for "tarring with the same brush".

If anyone wants a big chunky and friendly cockerel I've one that is crossbred Splash Orpington x Crested Cream Legbar.  A SO boy got into the CCL hens by mistake and 2 of the new hatched eggs were black/grey so no head markings to autosex on the night I went to collect day olds, so I took the purebreds plus these 2 just in case - the other turned out to be a nice wee blue/grey hen with a crest so not a complete loss.

He was hatched Highland Show week late June, never aggressive to date, could be culled and eaten but not by me cos I'm a vegetarian!  If he were a purebred Legbar, Welsummer or something else I have pure hens of, I'd keep him for hatching eggs, but I don't think he's much in demand for his gene pool as he is.

Meantime I'm just feeding him like the rest just now, for little purpose except wussiness and the fact he has a clean slate behaviourally so far (7-8 months old).

Hi there - I do have a cockerel free to a good home if anyone is interested. He's a mixed breed with some Sussex. At the moment he is the only cockerel on the small holding looking at our last 8 hens. We're selling all the birds so hopefully we can find him a good home.

Anyone interested, send me a message. We also have Norfolk geese, Bronze turkeys and Pekin ducks for sale!

Best.
