Title: Pig prolapse - Update

One of my 11 week old weaners had a prolapse which seems to have ruptured. It looks awful but she is running around is if there wasn't a problem.


I have called the vets and sent them a picture and am currently waiting for the vet to call me back.


We have had sheep prolapse and chickens but I haven't heard of it in a pig before. Anyone know what the prognosis is?
Is it likely it can be fixed?

Was this a rectal prolapse? Are you sure it has burst and the other pigs haven't bitten it? Rectal prolapse can be put back and stitched but it will need antibiotics as infection is going to be a major risk.

Yes, it was rectal. I don't think the other piglet has bitten at it.
Vet surgery has confirmed they have received my email but still waiting for actual vet to call me back.
Good news if it can be put back and stitched. Antibi's won't be a problem.

Harmony, Vet has just phoned and from looking at the pics I sent said its rectal prolapse.
He is coming out later on to stitch and jab
We are keeping an eye out in case the other piglet takes an interest, in which case we will need to seperate for a while.

Hope it goes well. I understand that generally they make it to slaughter weight.

Vet has been.
Knocked her out, washed it, pushed it back and stitched her up. Then gave her a jab of long lasting antib's. She said we should keep them seperate for 24 hours until the smell of blood goes away and then they should be ok to go back together. When I left them they were sleeping either side of the fence.

Rectal prolapses are rare, we have only experienced 2 in nearly twenty years. 

Last one was funnily enough a couple of months ago in a Tamworth born in January.

Pig is fine, in fact she's competing at the South of England Show tomorrow !
