Hey - Im looking to get a Lleyn ram for this autumn and 2-4 ewes to try them out on crossing over primitives - anyone in Yorkshire interested in selling or loaning, let me know!
-
If only you were closer - although most of mine to go this year are crosses.
Word to the wise - don't flush them whatever you do! Unless, of course you want triplets and quads.
(My ram is a darling but he won't need a new home until next year(2016))
-
I dont flush anyway! I get enough twins out of hebrideans (and big so far ) without flushing, also I want a minimal inputs maximum welfare system, hence looking at using the lleyn to cross with.
-
Fair enough, I just thought I'd mention it. I bought a specialist bucket last year which was to help get the ewes in lamb at the first cycle, it did this magnificently but everything (regardless of breed) had twins, triplets or quads. So they did all lamb in the Easter holidays but A lot of extra work and too many born dead for my liking although apparently that was a problem in Pembrokeshire this year due to some bug or other.

I would avoid loan rams, better to buy a ram lamb or old ram from preferably a closed flock. There must be some Lleyn near you
-
Go see ME, Buy yourself a lleyn ram lamb to put some good maternal tributes into the ewes. And buy a Charmoise ram lamb, to put some good terminal traits into the lambs. Job done.
-
I did look at the Charmoise earlier this year but didnt have the time to travel to get one - I will try it out in future, and If I can get one within 40-50 miles this year.

Try Skipton sale of lleyn sheep in the autumn, also go on their website there should be a list of breeders
