Title: Help, 3yr old chicken farmer less than helpful!
Post by: little bo peep on May 09, 2015, 07:45:10 pm
Hi all, I have had eggs under a broody for nearly 48hrs, and then my 3yr old shut her out of the house for nearly 2hrs this afternoon when she was out for food, >:( as soon as I noticed I let her back in and she went straight back on them in a right huff. Is there any chance that the eggs might still be ok after cooling for that time? Any advice gratefully received, thanks in advance.

I agree.  Likely to be a problem if it happens again further along in the incubation cycle, though.

They'll be fine, I'm sure! Pheasants come and go a  lot in the early days.  and Ducks too!

Thank for the reassurance everyone! I'll candle at 7 days and see what's happening so fingers crossed. Little chicken farmer has had a talking too and I don't think it will be happening again.

My friends outside the farming community think kids and the animals are so idyllic, I beg to differ, said little farmer also climbed into the sheep pen yesterday while we were tail locking, and got knocked down by a ram. It's not as idyllic as it might seem, children and animals don't always mix.

I don't know Bopeep, my son has been helping with the sheep since 2 years old and has been knocked over a good few times and still loves it, there is no more perfect scene of childhood innocence than children playing tag with their pet lamb in the sunshine.

My 2 1/2 year old farmer got knocked off his feet by a ewe a few months back, fat lip and everything. He cornered her and she didn't consider him much of a barrier!

Today he snuck off and 'fed' the chickens by making a chicken food mountain in the corner of their pen. Bless him, he thought he'd been really helpful.

So far, he's far from helpful. I'm hoping he'll get better at it soon!

I got charged & head butted , knocked to the ground and given a few more head butts whilst on the ground by Rasputin our horned merino billy goat  .

I got my revenge on the bugger ... I ate him over eight or so months never has revenge tasted so sweet as when eaten hot , as kebabs ,  curried or stewed .

my daughter left the lid half off the incy and they cooled to 25 degrees for at least 12 hrs. I thought I might have lost them but they hatched no bother. you may be lucky.

I don't know about '3 year old', my OH turned electric off to do some wiring, by the time I came in and realised - 1 chick out of 30 made it :-(.  (they were stone cold and much nearer hatching)
