Title: When to Heptavac?
Post by: Slimjim on May 06, 2015, 07:40:11 am
There are three weeks between the eldest and youngest of my 10 lambs, so when would be the best time to heptavac them all? In the past, when they have been closer together, I have done it when the youngest is six weeks old then the second dose at 10 weeks.
But this year, I'm thinking when the youngest is 4 weeks old (eldest 7 weeks) for the first dose.
Or could the first dose be given as early as three weeks old?
Many thanks.

There are four weeks between my eldest and youngest so I was looking at the same question.  HeptavacP Plus info says no younger than three weeks, so I'm planning to do them when the youngest are three weeks.

i done mine, oldest 9 weeks, youngest 5 weeks. The mothers were covered with heptavac, i done them with Ovivac as its cheaper. Will use heptavac later on, with any i keep for breeding. I was told that the fact the mothers were covered with heptavac before lambing, the lambs just require one injection. Not sure about this though...

The lambs still need two jabs,
my vet said if the ewes are done pre-lambing the lambs can wait till 8 weeks otherwise they won't develop their own immunity properly.
jab at 3 weeks if ewes weren't covered or vulnerable cade lambs.

When a lamb gets enough colostrum this passes on colostridial antibodies which gives the lamb passive immunity , and if you where to give hep or similar it would re act with this Immunity .   The passive immunity starts to wear off  and by 6-8 wks of age can have become very weak  ( pasturella wears off early ) you then inject twice 4-6 wks apart  to give active immunity , but not until 2wks after the 2nd injection is full protection achieved   :sheep:

Did mine when youngest 4wks, eldest 5wks lucky only a week between1st and last. Always done as soon as youngest is old enough, had no more than 3wks between them.  :sunshine:

Thanks for all those. I was passing the vet's today so popped in to ask the question. She confirmed the view to inject them all when the youngest was 3 weeks old and again 4 weeks later.
