You know the "I've laid an egg" call that hens make, to show off, (clu-clu-clu-claaaaaaaaghc!!")
... One of our cockerels makes it!
None of the others ever have, and I know he's a bit special (he was hand reared (not by us) and took some teaching to be a man chicken!)
Is it just a way of celebrating being chicken, do anyone else's cockerels do this??
Just wondered! :chook:
-
One of mine snuggles down in a nest box making henny purring sounds - great poof :roflanim:
-
All 3 of mine do, its really embarrassing because the noise is overwhelming - they do it each time a hen lays an egg ;D
-
Mine also does this! And they go on for ages! :chook: :chook:
-
the only one of mine that does this is the big Minorcan boy who as yet, refuses to shag anything.
-
mine does - they all join in, even the neighbours' hens .... it might be a location finder call :roflanim:

I dare say that as in all animal life, though it's only recognisable in humans, some are not quite sure whether they are male or female.
It's a very interesting subject as, I read, all new life when embryonic is potentially female and only decides whether to be one or the other when a certain gene(or something ???) kicks in. Therefore some must not kick hard enough and would explain why some may be to all intent, say, male but have a female frame of mind and vice versca.
So don't judge your cockerells, give them a bit more corn ;D

I am that soft, and he is so splendid, that I can see myself keeping him even if he never does it :) He is really filling out now so we'll see what happens (his girls are very happy!)
-
if he was brought up with the girls being adult while he was a chick then it can take a while for him to feel able to challenge the pecking order. Introducing a new / younger hen who takes him seriously might help.

I had one that joined in with the clucking every time one of the (all older) girls announced she had laid an egg. :D

no, he ws bought in (and about 3 x what I would normally pay for a cockerel). I had a thread on him earlier this year. I have done everything I was recommended to and so far, nothing.
-
did you try the rubbing along his back thing? any response?
-
yeah, nothing :/

Cock-a-doodle-don't?!
Glad it isn't just my Jarvis!
Bless him, he's had three new girls this week....
