Hello Gary Sorry I wasn't thinking properly if you don't live in the Belmont area you wont see it.They have forecast snow and bad weather for next Wednesday.I claim they get the weather forcast right once a month on average. There used to be an excellent service from RAF Binbrook but like a lot more things used to be.I can remember when all the trawlers in the North Sea radioed in and the forcast was accurate to the hour always with out fail. There used to be Atlantic Weather Ships etc; But now we have millions of pounds worth of satelites and haven't a clue LOL :farmer:
-
it cost us a lot with hay and gas round bale a day 3 weeks pens water etc very hard over christmas
-
the met office is hopeless up here. they don't even have radar coverage. apart from the odd week we have been white since mid december.
ten more days worth of white weather will make this year very bad.
-
yes just out side aviemore snow came week before christmas worked all day christmas eve just got back for the local service started snowing christmas eve . all pens 53 arks gone 4 ft could not see where they were .2 days later got things a bit better and it snowd again .could onley see the sheeps head .. so we have had 4 days mield till next week .need to get rid off febuarey all the best

Bamford Please don't get me wrong will you.As I understand many Scots people where you live expect a lot of snow.Make a nice living out the visitors riding down the hills on their upturned ironing boards, but here in Grimsby 4" would be one hell of a fall it usually dumps the far side of the Lincolnshire Wolds The trouble is the bit we get is turned to that awful grey ice its dreadful walking on the footpaths and worse driving. Many years ago there was a powerfull east wind and it swept all the snow out the field onto the road between the two hedges making it sort of 4 - 5 foot deep but a Caterpillar tractor dug it out in a day and the traffic could go again but it must be 25 years ago.Regards George

The lowest temperatures occur early in the morning of clear above a layer of fresh snow (which is an excellent insulator and allows the air above it to cool radiatively. An absence of winds prevents warming by mixing of layers of air. Valley bottoms can act as frost hollows, permitting low temperatures. In Scotland and Northern Irleand the lowest temperatures usually occur in Arctic air with northerly winds. In the south, the coldest winter days happen when very cold continental air is brought in from the east. In the south the easterly air mass has to cross a smaller area of warming water (the Channel) than east Scotland, say, where the North Sea is much wider. On the other hand, the nights are longer in Scotland, and snow cover is more frequent. Although continental air is cold in winer, the exact degree of coldness depends on its origin and the track followed by the air mass from its source. AIr that comes straight from northern Russia over Poland and Germany can be exceptionally cold (e.g. as happened most notably in 1987, and most recently 1991). If the easterly blows from the Balkans and east Mediterranean it is less much less cold (about 5C) and the weather tends to be damp and grey.
Low minima in summer happen on still nights with clear skies, over sandy soils, which are also poor conductors of heat.

Hello Gary Thanks for taking the time to explain first never had weather like your photo (Don't want it thanks Leave it to the folk with the ironing boards and skis.Second I had not heard of Altnaharra so I asked Google where it is and there are several sites about it but the best one has self changing picture views I certainly wouldn't mind a visit in summer it looks grand.I am NOT coming this week if its like your photo.I shall stick with my 2" in Grimsby and have a ride to Wold Newton or some where similar if I get the urge to view snow ;D Thanks again for the lead I'm going back now to "Discover Scotland" and educate myself further. It is said the wind brings the snow from the Russian Steppes here and the Wolds lift the clouds then of course it snows like mad 10 miles away and blocks the roads all along the top and yonder side the Wolds.Leaving Grimsby with that awful grey wet miserable weather.YTV have forecast snow for here on Wednesday I'll tell you what happens Thanks Gary :farmer:
