Title: Chicken feed best before dates
Post by: Clansman on March 25, 2015, 08:41:26 pm
I've noticed four local supply places recently selling chicken feed which is well past it sell by date, anything up to 5 months out of date!

Some of them have the dates erased completely

I've pointed it out to them on more than a few occasions but its still out for sale and slowly disappearing.  :innocent:

Most milled poultry rations have a 3 month expiry day, a lot of the vitamins etc degrade after this point and basically what you'd be feeding your birds has no more nutritional value than wheat.

Double check your bagged feed dates!

Nothing wrong with selling stuff that's passed it's BB date though I would expect a price reduction. Very probably nothing wrong with the feed either as long as it's been stored properly.

Yes a price reduction and a notice on it saying its out of date would be good but thats not happening, people are buying old feed unaware its out of date.

Whole grains will keep for months if not years just fine but Starter crumb and other milled feeds 5 months out of date will have lost most their vitamin, mineral and nutritional value, it'll look ok and they'll eat it, it just won't be doing the birds much good
