Title: Fouling Ark
Post by: spursman on February 03, 2010, 06:28:06 pm
Any tips on stopping weaners fouling in the ark. I think these pigs have come from a poor setup as I was not allowed to see the conditions they were being raised in. The pigs were very dirty and must have been laying in there own droppings not being allowed outside. I thought about not taking the pigs but would probably have regretted leaving them in those conditions. Any solutions please.

If that was a dog I'd shut them out of their sleeping quarters but give them some shelter from wet and sun.  In fact I will be doing that soon when I get my new outdoor runs set up.

we have had 3 pigs of a good friend of ours who breeds them(british saddle back)
he has a good rep, as he and his wife has a local farm shop too.
ours do a little in their ark, but only a little, they have designated a place
behind the ark.
i think with some tlc, and when they settle with you, you will find they will
do the same. are they for the table ours are.
let us know how they get on, well done on taking them home ;) :pig: :cat: :chook: :dog: :goat:

Could you make them a loo just outside their arc, perhaps a pile of straw with some of their dirty straw and droppings on the top?

dogandjo I agree if the weather was better I would keep them out all day.
Hilary I have tried what you suggest but to no effect.
Thanks for the replies.

Perhaps better to eat these and to start again with new stock?

ps Thank you for the compliment, but I'm not Hilary, she's far better looking than me

You need to break the cycle.  We have got problems at the moment with some of our weaners pooing in their ark.  We are going to be moving them shortly to try and break the cycle.  I don't think it has anything to do with how they are raised, ours are outside with plenty of clean straw and yet still they do it.

Pigman you say you are going to move them, is this into another ark in a different paddock. I have tried everything I can think of but they still insist on doing it in the ark.
