Just saw some of these on the My Dream Farm clip for next week - they look really lovely! Such unusual furry coats for pigs! If I was in the market for pigs I'd try these.
-
The meat is divine
-
unregistered weaners for meat, £50
and yes HM they are the best taisting pigs we raise ;D
-
We eat our own GOS which naturally we think is the best ever, but when we had some mangalitsa (gift from a kind friend) my OH thought it was decent steak from the UK (you dont get good steak here unless you can afford to pay massive premium)
-
HM they are very yummy, we havent got any left in the freezer... but we have one going in a couple of weeks ;D
I should also say they make lovely pets, very friendly and they are quite easy pigs to manage. They are very thrifty compared to some others we breed, for example our blond sow has raised a litter of 6 and we only increased her feed by 50%, the wee ones are now weaned and she is fat as butter!!! I think she will need a diet!!

I think she will need a diet!!
She MUST be related to Hilary
-
Honestly she hasnt lost an ounce, in fact i think she has gained 10 stone!!!! and the piglets are right little barrels
-
Blondes all sold now thanks ;D
3 red gilts, birth notified 3 months old can be pedigree registered £150
3 red boars, as above, pedigree registered £75 for unregistered for fattening £60
the reds are the rarer of the pure colours and the tallest leanest of all mangalitzas, litter size averages 6 to 8

I love their curly coats - I wonder if they can be spun into yarn?? Hmm....
-
I have lost the link, there was someone here in Brittany spinning mangalitsa hair.
I dont know if its feasible but there was someone on www.pigsinfrance.com looking for mangalitsas on the live exchange. Would they be worth contacting smiffy. I know the costs of importing are high, but the only mangalitsa breeders I know of are no longer breeding purebreds.
-
Really? I wonder if the spun yarn would be quite coarse? From what I've seen, the hair is quite thick, curly and coarse? Sorry, fibre mad people like me would find every opportunity to spin - I've got friends who spin dog hair, cat hair, their own hair, you name it! :P
-
I sent some hair to france for spinning last year, she was quite excited, however i havent heard anything back
-
Smiffy where did you send it to? Was it a lady in Brittany?
-
i think it was burgandy, however it was early last year, so not 100% sure
