Title: Tree - girth/weight conversion ?

Hi
Not sure if this is the right place to ask so feel free to move me :-)
 
I believe there is a way of working out the weight of a tree trunk by measuring the girth? would appreciate any pointers
 
Sadly we had to fell a beautiful old Beech tree, possibly about 200yr old. A huge limb fell off last year and local council gave permission to fell it immediatley before someone was hurt. We've cut it down, trimmed some branches but have a problem as its in the river. talking of winching it to the base of one of the other trees just to take the weight while it's cut into smaller sections.
Poor thing.
