Title: Chances of duck going broody?
Post by: twizzel on February 16, 2015, 11:40:25 am
About a month ago I bought 2 POL Aylesbury ducks and an unrelated drake. 1 duck is laying ( :excited: ) the other not yet but I suspect it won't be long as she is starting to get a few dark spots on her beak. The duck that is laying started off laying in the house and leaving the eggs but in the last week or so I've found that she's hiding the eggs- first time I found them I removed them as needed to bake a cake  :P  but she's done the same thing again since.

Chances of her going broody? I'm not sure whether to leave them there or remove. The fact that she's made a 2nd nest after the first was removed is what's making me thing she may sit but I'm really not sure- I thought ducks aside from Muscovys notoriously don't go broody. I didn't really want to fire up the incubator until both were laying steadily...

She may Well go broody! I have even had k Campbell's hatch out ducklings a few times! She won't  lay as many eggs if you let her go broody obviously... But if you take the ducklings away and hand rear them she will come back into lay! N

I've never had a broody duck but it is clearly possible - there must have been a way before incubators and even if we've tried to breed it out of them, some must have it in them still! Some breeds are more likely to than others.
