typing away I must have hit something "bad" (big fingers, small keys), it had opened a registry file, asking me to do it again, I thought what for, so ended up with a locked keyboard after clicking it off! I had to restart twice as it would not unlock after the first time and I couldn't even get my password in. Those 5 seconds were the longest I have experienced for some time...spooky after using XP for so many years. Stuff just happens all the time now without me planning any of it! :&>

Hey-up Duckling My you are brave I cannot get XP to do what I want and I've been playing everso long (since it came out) I haven't the courage to Install a new O/S I see on Tv there is another new one called Windows 7!!!Dare I Should I nehr I will keep soldiering on with XP.I dare bet my Pinnacle wont work to say nothing of the other programs related to video processing lol :farmer:

I've just installed W 7 on my PC, but still on XP on this laptop. Much prefer W7 - it is a wee bit like theMAcs now with pop up screens at the bottom so you can see what's open. How you got into a registry file goodness only knows, Kerstin! But never click yes to anything registry based, unless you are absolutely sure what it will do. They should be hidden and secure files anyway. What on earth were you doing at the time?

just looking at and answering my mail, Annie! My sausage fingers have to get used to the smaller keys yet...the touchscreen mouse is also something to work out, dear me! :&>
-
All you need to remember is to hesitate before you click 'OK' or 'YES' - stop and think, stop, look, an listen1 But I suppose that applies to a lot of things in life doesn't it? ;) ;D ;D ;D
-
I thought that was the GREEN MAN doganjo :) :farmer:

Yes, it was, Mr Wiz! I didn't follow my own advice last night - probably because I was working so late and was tired. Had spent all evening working on the Club accounts, closed the spreadsheet down and instead of clicking yes i clicked no and it all got lost! Aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhh!!! Maybe a blessing in disguise though as I was getting a bit bogged down. Anyway - off to start again! wish me luck! ::)

-
It was Linz(FWS) I meant that for, Wizard, although she is pretty up on IT stuff so thought she might already know what W7 needs.
-
My word Annie I'll never be well up on IT I have a very talented GURU who tells me what to do and I strictly adhere to his guide lines.and I am usually ok but things do still go wrong.I still cannot do cut and paste no matter how hard I try I all ways loose it somewhere along the way Regards :farmer:

I had bought a printer, too...now here's story...
it works fine with the new laptop, no worries! I also installed the printer software so the kids could do their "homework" on the old PC. I had taken several programs off first for the memory and defragged. It all set up fine, wouldn't print though. Same thing the next day. Today the blooming old box went on total strike or has to be written off - got stuck loading up, even the clock stopped working, I can't access anything... And yes, I did what the lad from the IT Crowd always says (have you tried turning it off and back on again). The kids are miffed as they are NEVER allowed to use the new one and I can't afford to give them a new machine for MSN home work and Club Penguin! :&>
-
Kerstin my main pc is Windows XP and the lap top Vista. I put the lap top onto my printer and it threw out the PC with XP. It can only be one or the other I was told.
-
even if the printer is run via a USB? As nothing at all was happening on the PC I have he feeling it might be a hardware problem. I only loaded the printer onto the laptop after he trouble started yesterday... :&>
-
Could you maybe clear absolutely everything off the old one except what they need? Or is it totally dead anyway?
-
it's not loading up fully. the hourglass is going but apart from all the windows icons showing that's it, even the clock stopped working... maybe I should go into the setup during sart up, but what would I do there or look for?
and today first time ever since I had them he ducks are refusing to leave their house, whatever is going on there? :&>
-
James, my laptop is on XP, my PC was on Vista and is now on Windows 7 - both can send to my two printers with no problem. One printer is a deskjet and the other a laser. To my knowledge it's the settings that control whether a printer can be used not the operating system.
-
Annie you are more up on technology on me then, next time you are here you can sort my PC out ha ha
-
I managed to get in via the visitors icon today, took ALL programs off liek the new printer, games, spyware, and defragged it, ran the virus scan. The resident shield actially found a worm, so hard ro tell what caused the problem. At least he kids can go on and homework will go on a memory stick and printed off mine...relief :&>

Well done, Kerstin!
