Title: A good large vine tomato
Post by: suziequeue on January 19, 2015, 11:56:12 am
Anybody got any recommendations for a good large red vine tomato? I have grown super marmande in the past which is great but it is a bush variety and - although it is trainable up a string, it does revert to bushiiness in the end because I can't keep up with it over the summer.

I want something bigger the Gardners Delight. It's only going to be used to make passata.

Any suggestions?

Are plum tomatoes not best for sauces, passata etc?  Super Roma is ok but I can't grow that up here.  I used to grow another one but I've forgotten what it's called - something beginning with 'I'  ::)  But if you can grow Marmande, then you can grow Roma.  It doesn't contain so much water as other tomatoes, so there's less waste than with juicier types.  Can't remember if it's a bush though...I think it must be as the Italians grow it in open fields with no support.
