Post by: Jakebob on January 17, 2015, 09:36:22 pm
I have just remembered that I haven't fertilised/put dung on my rhubarb yet, am I too late? What do you put on and when? Thank you.

Early spring dig in sheep manure around the plant. Or as my father used to do in the winter cover ground around with farm manure carefull not to cover crown. Rhubarb a fantastic plant comes up year after year with very little attention. Rhubarb tart Mmmmm yummy my very favourite followed closely buy rhubarb crumble. Custard with stewed rhubarb, Rhubarb jam, o stop me.

I don't think it matters much when you put manure around your rhubarb, but if you want the benefit this year then now is the time to do it.  I have masses of the stuff, but the crowns need to be divided and I have no chance of doing it this winter - we have more than we can cope with, so it doesn't matter if the crop from each plant is a little less than usual.

Mine is just starting to pop up, in spite of the low temp. Minus 12 possible here tonight, so the new little stems might not survive  :(
