I'm putting up a new house and would like a cattle grid at the top of the driveway, partly to avoid the need for a gate but mainly to intercept water that will run off the public road and wash away all my gravel.
I'm amazed at the cost of these things though- best part of £2k for a new one. Ouch.
Wondering if it would be practical to build one, using a blockwork foundation and galvanised steel pipes or RSJs. Anybody done this?

I'm surprised it's as much as that. Could you put a sketch together and send out to local steelwork manufacturers to see if they can do it any cheaper? (you'd want it galvanized too).

Ouch!
I'd be looking to see if I could find some old railway tracks at scrap value.

Yes I saw that (ebay saved search) but postage could be a bit problematic :D
