Title: Can I trace a pig from its slap mark?
Post by: suziequeue on December 21, 2014, 09:19:18 am
Just curious really. Bought a gammon from the butcher and it has a slap mark on it - 73746.

How can I trace the origin of the pig?

Don't think that's a UK slapmark and not a slaughterhouse number, could be a processor number, whereabouts did you buy it, and is it definitely uk?

UK herd nos. are one or two letters followed by 4 numbers - AB1234.

I got it from the butcher. He wasn't pretending that it was anything other than a bog standard gammon. Yes - the slap mark isn't English. I expect it's Danish

Anyway - it turned out as per so I'm happy
